Principal Engineer – Transmission Planning

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Transmission & Regulatory group is looking for mid-senior to senior-level power system engineers and leaders to join its dynamic consulting team across North America – US and Canada. The candidate will independently conduct generation and transmission projects, control the budget, and direct junior-level engineers to collectively work and meet project objectives. The role requires performing power network modeling and analyses based on knowledge and expertise of power generation and transmission principles. The engineer is expected to contribute towards the successful completion of a range of consulting projects focused on power system planning studies involving Steady-State, Short Circuit and Dynamic Stability, Generator and Renewables Interconnections, Power System Economics, Market analysis, and Grid Resilience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform Independent steady-state, transient stability, and fast transient model development, analysis, results verification, and reporting.
  • Conduct and lead technical studies for generator interconnection including system impact, feasibility, and deliverability.
  • Support and excel in continuous personal improvement and team management efforts.
  • Perform technical studies per ISOs/RTOs requirements and methodology.
  • Develop detailed transmission system models in the EMT software.
  • Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Develop an understanding and comply with the Transmission and Regulatory quality program.
  • Guide and instruct team members using a strong technical understanding of generation (including IBR), transmission, interconnection, customer and load, and modeling principles.
  • Management of budget, schedule, and quality to ensure successful completion of power system studies projects.
  • Project Coordination: Shares and coordinates information with other team members.
  • Client Focus: Focuses on the needs of internal clients (project team leadership) while attempting to gain an understanding of the external client’s main interests and drivers.
  • Risk Awareness: Identifies technical, practical, and economical project risks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

TRAVEL

The ideal candidate is willing and able to travel to client locations and industry meetings as necessary

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or another related field
  • 6 years of managing and conducting technical studies including transmission planning and generation interconnection with ISO, Utilities, or consulting firms.
  • Experience and proficiency in regulatory requirements and compliance methodologies for NERC standards including TPL, MOD, and CIP.
  • Proven track record of technical excellence including published reports or papers.

SKILLS & SOFTWARE

  • Proficiency in  power-flow study software tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, TARA, Aspen, PSCAD, and MATLAB
  • Working knowledge of computer languages such as Python, C, MATLAB, and FORTRAN
  • RTO/ISO market pricing structures and processes
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • Excellent communication, presentation, reporting, teamwork, and facilitation skills
  • Aptitude for critical and analytical thinking as well as the capacity to accept out-of-the-box solutions
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with clients at engineering and management levels

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • Experience with Project Management in a professional consulting or electric utility environment
  • More than 6 years of managing and direct responsibility for technical studies including transmission planning and generation interconnection with ISO, Utilities, or Consulting firms.
  • Familiarity with cost estimation and facility studies.

SKILLS & SOFTWARE

  • Expertise with PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, TARA, Aspen, PSCAD, and MATLAB
  • Proficiency in Python, C, MATLAB, and FORTRAN
  • Expertise in Excel
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

LOCATION

Quanta Technology has offices in Raleigh, NC, Markham, ON, Lombard, IL, and San Clemente, CA. We offer hybrid employment that supports a blend of in-office and remote work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions are normal for a professional office environment. Work may require overnight national and international travel.
