POSITION OVERVIEW
The Lead Engineer – Distribution Protection Coordination is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing and executing protection and coordination studies for distribution systems. The position involves designing and optimizing relay settings to ensure reliable operation of protective equipment and enhancing system safety. The Lead Engineer will collaborate with clients and internal teams, mentor junior engineers, and drive projects from concept to completion. This role is ideal for a proactive and experienced engineer with strong technical expertise in protection coordination and power system analysis tools.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the development of protection and relay coordination studies to optimize system performance.
- Design and develop relay settings using advanced tools, considering fault current calculations and load flow studies.
- Analyze protection schemes and time-current curves to ensure effective system coordination.
- Provide expert recommendations on protection strategies aligned with industry standards.
- Utilize tools such as CYME, SYNERGI, ETAP, ASPEN, and others for modeling and validating protection systems.
- Specify and configure relay settings, reclosers, fuses, and trip savers for proper system design.
- Conduct fault analysis, DER integration studies, and automation scheme evaluations.
- Review relay operations and system disturbances, offering actionable resolutions.
- Lead system modeling activities and quality assessments to ensure protection device coordination.
- Support substation and distribution automation through IED configuration and network setups.
- Mentor team members, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
- Prepare high-quality reports and deliver presentations for clients and stakeholders.
- Stay informed about technological advancements and emerging trends in distribution protection.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in protection coordination or related fields.
SYSTEMS & SKILLS
- Expertise in power system analysis software, including CYME, SYNERGI, ETAP, SKM, and ASPEN.
- Solid understanding of protection schemes, fault analysis, and relay coordination.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or eligibility for licensure.
- Familiarity with advanced automation systems, FLISR, and self-healing networks.
- Hands-on experience with relay settings for microprocessor-based devices like SEL and GE.
SYSTEMS & SKILLS
- Proficiency in using power system tools like CYME, Synergi, ETAP, SKM, ASPEN or CAPE.
- Knowledge of communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850) and SCADA systems.
- Demonstrated success in mentoring teams and driving projects to completion.
- Expertise in creating relay settings, logic diagrams, and coordination for distribution devices.
LOCATION
Quanta Technology has offices in Raleigh, NC, Markham, ON, Lombard, IL, and San Clemente, CA. We offer hybrid employment that supports a blend of in-office and remote work.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work may require overnight national and international travel.
Working conditions are normal for a professional office environment. When working in a field or lab environment, protective personal equipment or additional safety training may be required. The role may require the ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and work in various weather conditions. Ability to sit, stand, kneel, and bend is required.
