POSITION OVERVIEW
The primary focus of this position is to support the integration of technology for emerging applications of power electronics and advanced controls and protection in energy systems (e.g., energy storage systems, Microgrids, etc.). The position requires hands-on experience and previous engagements in the development and troubleshooting of systems in the field or as part of integration process support in a laboratory environment. The candidate should have experience with programming/configuring control and automation devices and SCADA systems from various North American vendors, such as SEL (e.g., RTAC, AXION, SEL relays), Nova Tech (Orion LX), SCADA packages (e.g., Ignition, Simatic, Zenon, etc.). The successful candidate should demonstrate strong technical skills and proficiency in the integration process of utility control, monitoring, and automation systems. The ideal candidate will be able to lead the team from both the technical and business aspects of projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviewing and leading a team for programming and configuration of automation / SCADA devices, gateways, and RTUs
- Performing system integration, troubleshooting, and testing for electric utility projects
- Design test procedures and perform detailed investigation and evaluation of device-to-device connectivity, information exchange, and operation.
- Conduct tests in a laboratory environment on emerging technologies and analyze results to provide recommendations on design adjustment or performance enhancement solutions.
- Read electrical drawings and develop test setups, involving assembly, wiring, and settings and configuration of digital devices such as protective relays and automation controllers.
- Prepare project reports and descriptions of work.
- Prepare project proposals, Scope of Work, and request for quotation documents.
- Present services and team capabilities to existing and/or potential customers.
- Be a team player, promoting overall Quanta Technology
- Follow the Quanta Technology processes, strategic directions, and vision.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Development responsibilities include identifying and helping to develop strategic revenue-generating relationships with existing or potential customers. After an initial adjustment period, Advisors typically will perform Business Development activities assisting others in this area. Achievement of Business Development activities which result in being able to support one’s self in billable work. The ability to support additional staff in billable work will improve one’s assent within this position’s pay range. However, Advisors with strong technical skills who do not perform any level of Business Development activity may only ascend to the mid-level of this position’s pay range.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a relevant technical field from an accredited institution
- Technical expertise in at least one area of the utility industry as demonstrated by previous project experience or peer-reviewed publications, leadership in technical societies, and/or patents.
- 8 years of experience and demonstrated success in technical leadership.
- 8 years of experience in the utility industry of North American electric power systems.
- Experience in design, integration, testing, and commissioning of control and automation systems, programming, and evaluation of protective relays and IEDs.
SKILLS & SYSTEMS
- Knowledge of control and automation tools, IEC61131-3 PLC programming languages, and communication protocols in the power industry (DNP3, Modbus, etc.)
- Knowledge of SCADA system, RTUs, Gateways, and advanced communication protocols using DNP3 or IEC 61850
- Ability to read and follow sequence diagrams, flow charts, and electrical drawings.
- Familiarity with industrial standards associated with distribution automation, SCADA, and communications.
- Ethical and professional business manner in interactions with team members and customers
- Leadership capabilities
- Business and entrepreneurial spirit to support the development of proposals and business development activities.
- Strong communication skills including technical writing and presentations.
- Technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write proposals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Professional Engineer (P.E./P.Eng.)
- PhD or MSc in Electrical Engineering or a relevant technical field
- Experience with integration, commissioning, and testing of control, protection, and automation systems for renewable energy resources at T&D systems in a laboratory or field environment (BESS, PV, wind)
SKILLS & SYSTEMS
- Ability to implement control and automation systems using IEEE 2030.5 and OCPP protocols.
LOCATION
Quanta Technology has offices in Raleigh, NC, Markham, ON, Lombard, IL, and San Clemente, CA. We offer hybrid employment that supports a blend of in-office and remote work.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for a professional office environment. Work may require overnight regional, national, and international travel occasionally.
