Principal Engineer

Quanta Technology LLC seeks Principal Engineer (Raleigh, NC) Duties: Conduct short-circuit modeling of power system components to determine response of protective relays to faults and system disturbances. Perform short circuit studies using Software packages like CAPE, ASPEN. Develop relay settings for transmission lines, transformers, Buses, Breakers, and shunt reactors. Perform distribution fault studies to ensure settings coordinated with downstream devices such as reclosers and fuses. Perform wide area protection coordination analysis using CAPE software and analyzing the coordination and sensitivity of protective relays in transmission lines which has different types of relays from Schweitzer, ABB, GE (General Electric), Siemens, Alstom, etc. Evaluate NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) PRC-023 and PRC-027 for different utilities in US. Support substation and transmission projects with a focus on electrical protection and control activities. Create engineering drawings for upgrades, replacements and new installations in medium and high voltage substations and generating facilities. Design and specify control panels and associated equipment. Prepare protection equipment specifications, panel layout drawings, detailed design drawings, bills of materials, and electronic setting and logic files for various control and communication applications. Create protection recommendation for new and existing substation projects. Application of principles and techniques of electric power systems engineering, review of technical documents and manuals, modeling simulation and analysis of protection. Automation and control of power systems using Software such as CAPE, ASPEN. Help write proposals. Further develop Project Management skills.

 

Required:  Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electric Power Systems Engineering or related field plus 2 years of experience in the job offered, as Protection & Design Consultant, or related engineering position.

 

Must have 2 years of experience working on engineering projects in the electrical, or other power utility industries.

Must have experience with:

  • At least one or more of the following Short Circuit Modelling and Analysis Tools: CAPE, ETAP, ASPEN Onliner.
  • At least one or more of the following Protective Relays Setting Software: SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE EnerVista, ABB, Beckwith.
  • Power System Studies Tools: EMTP, MATLAB, OPENDSS, DigSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Real Time Simulation using HyperSim and RTlab.
  • R programming language.
  • Computer Aided design (AutoCAD) and Microstation PowerDraft.
  • Project Management for professional consulting or electric utility environment.
  • Power System Protection Settings.
  • Substation Protection and Control Design.
  • Protection and Control Engineering.

 

Employer will accept experience gained as research assistant during graduate studies. Able to work remote from any location within the US. National and international travel required up to 50% of the time for client and industry meetings.
