Tom Gentile, Jon Gardell and John Spare join Quanta Technology
May 21, 2008 - Quanta Technology, LLC, an independent consulting arm of Quanta Services, Inc.(NYSE:PWR), which is one of the largest specialty contractors serving utility transmission and distribution infrastructure in the United States, today announced that Thomas J. Gentile, Jonathan D. Gardell and John H. Spare have joined its consulting staff.

Tom Gentile, who joined Quanta Technology as a Senior Director and Manager of the new office in the Northeast USA, is a proven leader in the area of transmission and distribution planning, engineering and new technology development, with over 30 years of industry experience with utilities, teaching institutions, consultancies and industry committees. He has served over 24 years with National Grid in various supervisory and engineering capacities in the areas of new technology development, transmission and distribution planning, and commercial services, the latest assignments being Director of Technology Transfer and Transmission Planning. He has previously worked for Arthur D. Little in Physical Systems Research and GE’s Power System Engineering Department. His power system engineering teaching includes courses at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Northeastern University, Roger Williams College and Iowa State University. He has actively served in numerous industry committees including: New England Power Pool as Chair of the Transmission Planning Committee and Chair of the Information Policy working Group, New York State Reliability Council as Chair of the Executive Committee, NPCC on the Coordinated Planning Task Force, the NERC Transmission Issues Subcommittee and ERO Standards Drafting Team for the Transmission Planning (TPL) standards, and the FERC Ad-hoc Committee on Generation Interconnection Process. He has published 18 papers on power system design issues. Mr. Gentile received his BSEE from Northeastern University and his MSEE from Iowa State University.
Jon Gardell, who joined Quanta Technology as an Executive Advisor, is an industry expert in utility power plant and industrial plant facilities, with over 26 years of experience that include positions with the American Electric Power Service Corporation, GE’s Power Systems Engineering Department, FM Global Insurance Company and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. Most recently he was the Manager of Beckwith Electric Company’s Systems Engineering Department and a Principal Consultant with his own company. Mr. Gardell has provided many utility and industrial customers with help in their plant power systems, equipment and electrical protection and with industry groups regarding root causes of system outages. Jon has widely recognized expertise with protection of electric rotating machinery. He has authored many technical papers on diverse electrical system and equipment topics and has conducted numerous technical seminars across North America for both utility and industrial venues. He is the past Chairman of the revision of the IEEE Guide for AC Motor Protection C37.96-2000 and presently chairs two Working Groups in the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee. Mr. Gardell received his BSEE from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his MSEE from the Ohio State University.
John Spare, who joined Quanta Technology as a Principal Advisor, is an industry expert in utility power system planning, asset management and reliability analysis, with over 33 years of experience with KEMA as Senior Principal Consultant, Emerson Process Management as Consultant and 21 years with Exelon’s PECO Energy that included serving as Supervising Engineer. Dr. Spare has directed and performed a wide variety of infrastructure projects dealing with asset management and reliability improvement, business case development, reliability-centered and condition-based maintenance, failure mode-effect analysis, distribution automation, spatial load forecasting and ERO pre-audit condition assessment. He has authored over 20 published articles. He has served on numerous IEEE committees and working groups. Dr. Spare received his BSEE from Carnegie Mellon University and his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
