Senior Engineer Specializing in Power Hardware in Loop Testing (Protection & Control)


We need experienced Protection and control engineers who are interested in joining our growing team of experts.  As a member of our Protection and Automation group, you will work on some of the largest and most advanced system upgrade and revision projects in the power industry, alongside industry leaders.  You will have a chance to work at the leading edge of your specialty and provide thought leadership on how 21st-century power systems should operate and respond to contingencies. Location is at our office in Toronto, Canada. Travel & remote interaction with other offices in US (Raleigh, Oakland, San Diego, Boston) will be required. There are also opportunities to further broaden your career by working on assignments with our clients outside North America.


Qualified candidates will have at least three (3) years of experience in transmission protection engineering including proven competency in the following areas:

  • Conceptual Design and Prototyping
  • Hardware level integration and testing of automation and control algorithm
  • System design and architecture development modeling and verification
  • Technology selection, equipment sizing and benchmarking
  • Modular design and scalable deployment techniques, functional specifications and control requirements
  • Design and implementation of digital controllers and remote monitoring systems
  • Performance evaluation and operation analysis
  • Test plan and model development
  • Testing multiple what-if scenarios with several technologies in a closed loop
  • Power quality testing and evaluation (PHIL/CHIL)
  • Power and Control Hardware in Loop testing
  • Real Time Digital System (RTDS) modeling and system closed-loop evaluations
  • Substation HMI and Renewable Control and Automation system development
  • Evaluation of remote controls, dispatching and communications infrastructure



Qualifications required include:

  • MSEE in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Power Systems, PhD preferred
  • PE or P Engineer license is preferred
  • Proficiency in using and applying software modeling tools
  • Effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a fast paced team environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Visio, Word, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel and work independently at client locations or as a member of a team
